The Kinks foi uma banda de rock britânica formada em Londres, em 1963, por Ray Davies, Dave Davies e Pete Quaife. A formação original era composta por Ray Davies (guitarra guia, vocalista principal, piano, compositor principal), Dave Davies (composições, guitarrista principal, vocais), Pete Quaife (baixo, vocais) e Mick Avory (bateria).

Embora não tenham sido inovadores como os Beatles ou populares como os Rolling Stones, foi uma das mais influentes bandas da Invasão Britânica e provavelmente a mais representativa do movimento Mod, juntamente com o The Who e o Small Faces. Durante sua carreira o grupo se tornou famoso por seus conflitos, tanto públicos quanto privados, particularmente entre os irmãos Ray e Dave, que frequentemente resultavam em agressões.

Depois de uma carreira que atravessou os anos 60, 70 e 80 com algumas mudanças de formação, os Kinks se separaram nos anos 90, quando os projetos solo dos irmãos Davies passaram a ter mais importância para eles. No começo de 2000 rumores de uma reunião começaram a circular, mas incidentes ocorridos com os irmãos em 2004 (Ray levou um tiro na perna ao perseguir assaltantes em Nova Orleans, em 4 de janeiro; Dave, em 30 de julho, sofreu um derrame cerebral em Londres) adiaram quaisquer tentativas de reagrupar a banda.

Anos 60.

O The Kinks, que tiveram como primeiro nome The Ravens, começou sua carreira em 1962, tendo gravado seu primeiro compacto pela Pye Records com um sucesso de Little Richard: “Long Tall Sally”. Mas foi pelo terceiro single que ficaram conhecidos: “You Really Got Me” pode ser considerada o nascimento do heavy metal, em 1964. Essa canção chegou ao 1º lugar nas paradas de sucessos britânicas e durante os 3 anos seguintes a criatividade e inspiração de Ray Davies produziria pérolas como “Tired of Waiting for You”, “Everybody’s gonna be happy”, “Set me free”, “I need you”, “See my friend” e “Till the end of the day”, dentre outras, sempre fugindo da mediocridade através da introdução de novas idéias tanto na sonoridade como nos temas abordados. A postura “excêntrica” do grupo (justificando o seu nome), porém, trazia problemas para que fossem totalmente aceitos como um dos grandes grupos de rock da época. Com Face To Face (1966) e Something Else By The Kinks (1967) afiaram sua visão irônica da época e dos costumes britânicos em sucessos como “Death of a clown”, “Autumn almanac”, “Tin soldier man” e “Afternoon tea”. Essa crítica atingiu níveis extremos em The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society (1968) e Arthur Or The Decline Of The British Empire (1969). Esse último trabalho, que foi a primeira ópera-rock gravada, chocou a opinião pública pela forma direta como tratava a decadência econômica e moral do Império Britânico, e não chegou às paradas de sucesso.

Anos 70.

Lola vs. Powerman And The Moneygoround (1970), uma fábula sobre travestis, os levou novamente ao topo das paradas e consolidou sua fama também nos Estados Unidos, onde músicas suas se tornaram hinos na luta contra a guerra do Vietnam. Os Kinks aproveitaram o momento realizando grandes concertos e extraindo todas as possibilidades musicais de seus discos conceituais, com a incorporação de instrumentistas em seus shows. Seu próximo disco, Muswell Hillbillies (1971), carregava forte influencia do country norte americano. Preservation: a play in two acts (1974), Soap Opera (1975) e Schoolboys in disgrace (1975) não trouxeram nada de novo, mas funcionaram como preparação para os ótimos Sleepwalker (1977) e Misfits (1978), álbuns com melodias marcantes e letras de qualidade, abandonando a necessidade de um fio temático condutor. Nessa época Jim Rodford assumiu o contra-baixo. A imprensa britânica se viu obrigada a divulgar o sucesso de seus megaconcertos americanos.

Anos 80.

Low Budget (1979) e Come Dancing with The Kinks (1983) frequentaram as paradas de sucesso e sua obra era resgatada por grandes nomes da época como David Bowie, Van Halen (“You really got me”) e The Pretenders (“Stop you sobbing”). Dois álbuns ao vivo demonstraram toda a potência das performances do grupo, enquanto sua criatividade era reciclada: One for the Road (1980) e Give the People What They Want (1981). Ray Davies tem uma filha (Natalie) de seu relacionamento com Chrissie Hinde dos Pretenders, em 1983. State of confusion (1983), Word of mouth (1984), Think visual (1986) e UK Jive (1989) estavam bem acima da média do que era produzido na época, apesar de não superar os trabalhos anteriores do grupo. Bob Henrit substituía Mick Avory, na bateria.

Anos 90 até os dias de hoje.

Em 1990, The Kinks foram indicados para o Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, reconhecendo sua contribuição para a música. Em 1993 lançam Phobia, que também resultou em uma grande tournée nos EUA. Em 1994 sai To The Bone, uma gravação ao vivo em estúdio de vários hits da banda. Em 1996 é lançada uma coletânea com os maiores sucessos da banda, cujo título é um trocadilho que reflete bem o pensamento daqueles que cultuam a música deste grupo: God Save The Kinks. A banda acabou em 1996, quando os projetos solo dos irmãos Davies passaram a ter mais importância para eles.
